Non-cash Donations: So How Much Is That Sweater Worth?

The IRS allows a deduction for the fair market value of items
contributed to qualified organizations. So how much is that old
sweater that’s boxed up in the garage worth as a tax
donation? The trouble is, sometimes, it’s hard to know the
value of a 10 year old sweater that may not fit anymore but is in
good condition. So how does one determine the "fair market
value"?
While we can’t tell you how much your things are worth, we
recently found the Salvation Army Donation Valuation Guide on the
Salvation Army’s web site. This guide should give you an idea
of what the thrift store’s value is for various types of
items.

Remember that to be deductible, clothing and household items donated to charity must be in good used condition or better. A clothing or household item for which a taxpayer claims a deduction of over $500 does not have to be in good used condition or better if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the return. Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances, and linens.
